Pricing and Project Quotes

Clear written quotes based on the actual needs of the book.

Publishing projects vary widely in length, condition, complexity, research, writing, editing, production, and author-support requirements. Each project is therefore reviewed and quoted according to its defined scope.

How Pricing Works

No unexplained flat fee for work that has not yet been evaluated.

A short formatting project and a full ghostwritten book are fundamentally different assignments. We first determine what the author has, what the finished book requires, and which responsibilities belong to each party.

Every written quote should identify

  • The services included in the project
  • The principal deliverables and formats
  • The estimated schedule or project stages
  • Author and publisher responsibilities
  • Approval points and included revision rounds
  • Fees, deposits, and payment milestones
  • Known exclusions and outside expenses

Pricing may be structured as

  • A fixed project fee for a clearly defined assignment
  • Milestone payments for larger projects
  • A deposit followed by scheduled balances
  • An hourly or separately quoted fee for added work
  • A new estimate when the original scope changes materially

The initial inquiry does not create a payment obligation.

No paid work begins until the project has been reviewed and the author has accepted the applicable written proposal, invoice, service agreement, or other project document.

Generally up to $5,000

  • Extensive original writing or research
  • Long or highly complex manuscripts
  • Multiple contributors or source collections
  • Special formatting, citations, or permissions
  • Large projects divided into milestones
Discuss the Project

Most projects will fall well below the complex-project maximum.

A higher custom quote is reserved for unusually long, research-heavy, technically complicated, or labor-intensive books. No expanded scope is added without the author’s knowledge and written approval.

Payment and Scope Principles

Important terms should be understood before work begins.

Deposits and milestone payments

Some projects may require an initial deposit before work is scheduled. Larger projects may be divided into clearly defined milestones, with payments due as agreed stages are reached.

Revisions

The proposal should state which revision rounds are included. Extensive rewriting, new directions, replacement material, or revisions beyond the agreed scope may require additional time and fees.

Added or changed work

Authors may request additional services after work begins. Material changes should be documented and approved before the additional work is performed or billed.

Outside expenses

Third-party expenses are not automatically included unless the written quote says otherwise. Examples may include proof copies, ISBN purchases, licensed artwork, specialty editing, indexing, advertising, or paid publishing-platform services.

Pauses and cancellations

Project documents should explain how pauses, missed author deadlines, cancellation, completed work, reserved production time, and any eligible refund are handled.

No guaranteed commercial result

Fees cover the agreed professional work. They do not purchase guaranteed sales, rankings, reviews, royalties, media attention, or commercial success.

Payments and Payment Plans

Payment arrangements are matched to the size and stages of the project.

Payments may be collected securely through Stripe. The exact amount, due dates, and project milestones will be stated in the written proposal or invoice.

Projects under $300

Small fixed-price services are normally paid in full before work is scheduled or begins.

Projects from $300 to $999

These projects will normally require a 50% deposit to begin, with the remaining balance due before final files, delivery, or publication assistance.

Projects of $1,000 or more

Larger projects may use an initial deposit followed by milestone payments tied to planning, manuscript development, editing, production, or final delivery.

Approved payment plans

A limited payment plan may be offered for selected projects. Work stages, payment dates, and delivery requirements must be agreed upon in writing.

Late or missed payments

Work may pause when an agreed payment is overdue. Final files and publication assistance are provided after the amount currently due has been paid.

Stripe payment links and invoices

Small services may use a secure payment link. Deposits, balances, and milestone payments may be collected through separate Stripe invoices.

Payment plans do not change the total approved project price.

They divide the agreed amount into manageable payments. Additional work, major changes, or services outside the original scope require separate approval.

What Affects the Quote

The condition and complexity of the project determine the work required.

Manuscript factors

  • Current and expected word count
  • Completeness and organization
  • Writing, rewriting, or ghostwriting needs
  • Research, interviews, citations, and permissions
  • Editorial condition and revision requirements

Production factors

  • Kindle, paperback, and hardcover formats
  • Interior complexity, tables, images, or special layouts
  • Cover development or coordination
  • Metadata, ISBN, and Amazon KDP assistance
  • Launch, website, or promotional support

A written quote controls the final price and scope.

Starting prices provide general guidance. Every accepted project receives written terms identifying the services, payments, responsibilities, included revisions, outside expenses, and delivery expectations.
